European Furniture Sydney: Handcrafted Solid Timber, Made to Order

For Sydney clients seeking furniture distinguished by longevity, individuality and material authenticity, European-made furniture offers a design proposition defined by craftsmanship and provenance.

Founded by designer Susan Pehar in 2009, ducksnest. represents a considered collection of European furniture from ARTISAN in Bosnia and Herzegovina and nunc in Croatia. Each brand combines generations of regional craftsmanship with contemporary European design, producing furniture that is purposeful, enduring and distinctly resolved.

From our South Melbourne showroom and design studio, we work with Sydney homeowners, architects and interior designers through remote consultations, material samples, detailed specifications and coordinated delivery throughout Sydney and New South Wales.

Whether you are furnishing one important room or specifying furniture across an entire project, our approach is personal, detailed and guided by the way the furniture will be lived with.

European Furniture with Genuine Provenance

The value of European furniture lies not simply in where it is made, but in the design intelligence, material knowledge and craftsmanship behind each piece. Its character is revealed through the way it is designed, constructed and finished.

The ducksnest. collection is produced by established European makers with a deep understanding of timber, proportion and joinery.

ARTISAN traces its origins to the Ćostović family woodwork shop in Bosnia and Herzegovina. With more than six decades of timber knowledge, the company specialises in sculptural solid-timber furniture shaped and finished by skilled craftspeople.

nunc is based in Đakovo, in Croatia’s Slavonia region – an area known for its forests, timber resources and woodworking tradition. The brand combines this heritage with a lighter, contemporary design language and modern production technology.

Both makers collaborate with respected European designers, including Regular Company, Salih Teskeredžić, Michael Schneider, Filter and Studio Ru:t. Their work has received international recognition through awards including the Red Dot Award, German Design Award, Interior Innovation Award, Design Intelligence Award and BIG SEE Wood Design Award.

This provenance matters. It means the designer, workshop, material and manufacturing origin of each piece are known.

Why Solid Timber Furniture Feels Different

Solid timber has a physical presence that is difficult to replicate.

ARTISAN furniture is shaped from full sections of European hardwood, allowing the structure, edges, curves and junctions to be resolved in the timber itself.

Available species include American walnut, European oak, European walnut, maple, elm, cherry and ash. Each has its own colour, grain pattern and natural variation.

These variations are not treated as imperfections. They are part of the material’s character and ensure that no two pieces are completely identical.

Natural-oiled, stained or lacquered finishes are used extensively throughout the collection. Unlike heavy surface coatings, oil allows the grain and tactile quality of the timber to remain visible. It also means many pieces can be maintained, refreshed and refinished over time.

The result is furniture that can develop character over time and be maintained or refreshed as required.

Made-to-Order European Furniture

Most furniture in the ducksnest. collection is made specifically for the individual client or project.

This allows each piece to be resolved in relation to the interior, with greater control over material, finish, proportion and detail.

Depending on the design, you may be able to specify:

  • American walnut, European oak, European walnut, maple, elm, cherry and ash
  • Natural oil, stained or lacquered finishes
  • Timber or upholstered seating
  • Fabrics and leathers from an extensive textile collection
  • Customer’s own material or leather on selected designs
  • Standard or customised table dimensions
  • Extension mechanisms and table configurations
  • Selected metal details in finishes such as inox or brass

Before production begins, every element is documented and confirmed. This includes dimensions, timber, finish, upholstery and any customised details.

Furniture made in this way asks for decisions earlier in the process, but the result is a piece selected for a particular interior rather than simply purchased from available stock.

European Dining and Living Furniture

The ducksnest. collection is particularly strong in furniture for dining and living spaces.

Dining chairs are a central part of the range, from the sculptural Neva Chair and lighter Neva Light Chair to the Tesa and Mela collections. Each design balances comfort, craftsmanship and a recognisable architectural form.

Dining tables range from refined everyday designs to larger statement pieces for residential, hospitality and meeting environments. Fixed, round, oval and extendable configurations are available, with many designs offered in multiple dimensions.

The wider collection includes:

  • Dining and occasional chairs
  • Fixed and extension dining tables
  • Counter and bar stools
  • Benches
  • Lounge chairs and sofas
  • Daybeds
  • Coffee and side tables
  • Consoles and desks
  • Beds and storage furniture

The collection has been selected for consistency in material quality, design intelligence and craftsmanship.

A Shortlist of Signature Designs

Neva Chair by Regular Company

The Neva Chair is one of ARTISAN’s most recognisable designs. Its continuous, flowing form appears almost carved from a single piece of timber, while the shaped backrest provides comfort without visual heaviness.

Available with a timber or upholstered seat, the Neva works equally well around residential dining tables, meeting tables and selected hospitality settings.

Neva Chair

Neva Light Chair by Regular Company

The Neva Light Chair refines the language of the original Neva into a lighter and more restrained form. Its curved backrest transitions elegantly into the rear legs, creating a chair that feels delicate while remaining structurally resolved.

Neva Light Chair

Latus Table by Salih Teskeredžić

The Latus Table is defined by a fluid junction between its legs and tabletop. Its sculptural form gives the impression of a continuous pencil line, making it expressive without becoming overly decorative.

It is available in a range of standard lengths, with customised dimensions possible for selected applications.

Latus Table

Invito Extension Table by Michael Schneider

Invito is a practical solid-timber extension table with restrained proportions and a robust, enduring character. Multiple lengths, widths and extension configurations allow it to accommodate both everyday dining and larger gatherings.

Column Table by Regular Company

The Column Table is centred around a strong architectural base and is available in round, oval and double-base configurations. Its broad range of dimensions makes it suitable for dining, meeting and selected hospitality environments.

Cot Timber Stool by Studio Ru:t

Designed for nunc, the award-winning Cot Timber Stool combines solid timber legs with a metal footrest and a compact, characterful form. Counter and bar-height versions are available for residential, hospitality, commercial and education projects.

European Furniture for Sydney Homes

Furniture decisions are often easier when they begin with the room rather than the product.

During a consultation, we consider the architecture, available dimensions, circulation, existing materials and the way the space will be used. For dining areas, this may involve establishing the correct relationship between the table, chairs, walls and surrounding walkways. For living spaces, scale, comfort and sight lines are equally important.

Sydney clients can work with us remotely through video or telephone consultations. Plans, photographs and measurements can be reviewed together, followed by detailed recommendations and product specifications.

Timber, finish and upholstery samples can then be arranged so that materials can be considered in the actual interior and under its natural and artificial light.

Many Sydney clients also choose to visit the South Melbourne showroom while travelling to Melbourne. Private appointments can be arranged around your visit.

Support for Sydney Architects and Interior Designers

For architects and interior designers, furniture specification is rarely an isolated decision. A piece must work within a broader material palette, spatial plan, budget, programme and installation process.

We provide detailed product information, dimensions, finish options and material samples early in the selection process so that suitability can be assessed before the design is committed.

Our trade support includes:

  • Product selection and specification assistance
  • Detailed dimensions and technical information
  • Timber and finish samples
  • Upholstery selections and customer’s own material options
  • Advice on customised dimensions
  • Quotations and furniture schedules
  • Coordination of production and delivery
  • Access planning for larger pieces
  • Trade pricing for eligible practices

Where furniture is being considered for hospitality, commercial or education use, we can also advise on appropriate materials, finishes and configurations for the intended application.

We work as a specification partner alongside the architect or designer, supporting the project while respecting the established client relationship.
