Why we return to the Neva Chair
The Neva Chair is one of the pieces we return to most often when working through a dining setting. It is immediately recognisable, but it does not need to dominate the room to make an impression.
What we respond to is the way the timber has been resolved. The arched backrest narrows towards the arms and continues into the legs in one fluid composition, giving a solid timber chair an unexpected sense of lightness. From the rear, the chair is every bit as considered as it is from the front – an important detail in open-plan interiors where dining chairs are often viewed from adjoining living
spaces.
Neva also embodies much of what first drew ducksnest. to ARTISAN: organic shaping, a generous use of timber and considerable craftsmanship expressed with restraint. It has a strong identity, yet remains versatile enough to work with a wide range of tables, materials and architectural styles.

The Neva collection has already found a natural place within a notable Sydney hospitality interior.
At Lana Dining in Sydney’s Hinchcliff House, interiors by Mitchell & Eades feature Neva and Neva Light Chairs together with Neva Light Bar Stools in American walnut. Set against the project’s deep blues, soft pinks, brass and long pink marble bar, the warmth of walnut gives the furniture presence without competing with the room.
Lana Dining was shortlisted for Best Restaurant in the 2021 Eat Drink Design Awards. For us, the project is a useful example of how the Neva family can move beyond the residential dining room and sit confidently within a layered, highly resolved hospitality environment.
Choosing Timber and Upholstery
Material selection changes the character of the Neva considerably, which is why we prefer to consider timber and upholstery in relation to the wider interior rather than as an isolated product choice.
A pale oak can make the chair feel lighter and more architectural. Walnut gives the same form greater depth and richness, while upholstery introduces another layer of colour and texture. A timber seat keeps the focus on the sculptural form; an upholstered seat can soften the setting and create a stronger relationship with surrounding fabrics, rugs or joinery.
There is no need for every timber element in a room to match exactly. We look instead at how the chair relates to flooring, cabinetry, stone, the dining table and the natural light within the space. For Sydney projects, timber, finish and upholstery samples can be arranged so these relationships can be assessed in the actual interior before the specification is confirmed.

Although most often associated with dining rooms, the Neva Chair is specified across residential, hospitality, commercial and education settings.
